Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead

Until the 18th century Marlowes was little more than a muddy track which led from the south to the town of Hemel Hempstead which was what today we call the Old Town. The River Gade, which starts near Little Gaddesden, had watercress beds at Marlowes supplying 1/16th of the national demand. It was in the mid 1800s that Marlowes began to grow in importance with big houses and some businesses.

In 1914 No. 43 Marlowes was occupied by an artificial teeth manufacturer.

Marlowes is now the main shopping street of Hemel Hempstead and includes The Marlowes Shopping Centre.
