"Little Gaddesden & Ashridge" - Canon Howard Senar.
Phillimore & Co. Ltd. Shopwyke Hall, Chichester, Sussex PO20 6BQ 1983.
ISBN 0 85033 460 8Number 54 The Green, Little Gaddesden. This timber-framed house with casement windows is one of the older houses on the Green. It was suggested that there were plans for three cottages identical to the older part of this one. There had been three buildings between the present 50 and 54 in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century the occupants were Cox, Hennings and others. Part of the land was leased by John Lamport from the Ashridge Estate.
In 1838 the occupants were William Pratt, Timothy
Garratt, Sarah Hurndall, James Buckthorn and Jesse Holland. The older part of 54 dates from the 17th century. Lord Brownlow made additions in 1912, and this must have been amongst the latest work which he initiated. The Austin family came here in 1907. It had been a grocer’s shop. Stanley Austin added to the house and developed it.

Ringshall Cottages. Cottage numbers 3 to 13 were built earlier than 1820 and probably all have 18th-century work, some being restorations of late 17th-century cottages. Number 3 was used for a farm worker from Ringshall Hall Farm, and No. 4 for a farm worker from Wards Hurst Farm.

Fountain’s Store, Nos 5-6 Ringshall
Home of Susan GARRETT (b. 1850) and husband Alfred FOUNTAIN
The shop is mentioned in the 1878 rent agreement with Ashridge. Alfred Fountain had got permission to build the 8ft x 8ft extension between the house and the village pumphouse from Lord Brownlow and did the work himself. The stock came by horse-drawn cart from Tring, bringing bacon, tea, flour, sugar, rice, etc. Other stock came from local sources – dripping and lard from the kitchens at Ashridge and milk and butter from nearby farms. Vinegar came in a barrel and biscuits loose in large tins. Nothing was pre-packed and everything had to be weighed or measured out - blue bags for sugar and paper cones for smaller quantities. Fountain’s Stores was run by Susan and her descendants until it closed in 1980.

In the 1950’s there was no sanitation and no electricity. A chemical toilet was used, lighting was by oil lamp and a wireless was powered by an accumulator and high tension battery.
The plaque reads: These almshouses were erected and endowed by H O Roe 1840 for two married couples or four widows of this parish. To be selected from those who most frequent the church and each person to be not less than fifty years of age on admission.
