Cause of his death was mitral disease of the heart.
Born at Grendon Underwood, Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. At least until 1875 lived at Kingswood, Buckinghamshire. In 1881 lived with parents at 10 Charles Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. In 1891 lived with parents at Kitsbury Road, Berkhamsted and worked as a Clerk. Educated at Berkhamsted Board School and met the Elementary Education Act (1870) standard in 1886. In June 1886 started work as a Clerk at William Cooper & Nephews, Manufacturing Chemists, Berkhamsted. Still working as a Clerk in 1901. Eventually became Company Secretary and left there in 1918. In 1896 worked as a Clerk. In 1900 lived at Elm Grove, Berkhamsted. In 1901 lived with Ruth and 1 daughter at 5 Elm Grove, Berkhamsted, and worked as a Commercial Clerk. In 1904 lived at Shrublands Avenue, Berkhamsted. In 1908 lived at 7 Elm Grove, Berkhamsted. In 1912 lived at 12 Manor Street, Berkhamsted. In 1914 lived at 12 Manor Street, Berkhamsted. In 1917 lived at 12 Manor Street, Berkhamsted and sent out printed Christmas cards from Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Thompson and Family. Jan 1895 elected Captain Cycling Division of Berkhamsted Athletic Club. In 1896 attended the inaugural meeting of Berkhamsted & District Cycling Club and elected Secretary (pro tem). Became Secretary of Berkhamsted Cricket Club in 1898. 10 Mar 1899 re-elected Hon. Secretary at the AGM. 22 Jan 1908 attended, with Ruth, the Berkhamsted Cricket Club Ball at the Town Hall. At the AGM 28 Apr 1911 said he wished to resign as Secretary, but was persuaded to do another year. Resigned the post 26 Apr 1912 and was presented with a cheque as a token of the Club's esteem. He may have used this to buy his gold watch chain. This has a cricket bat and stumps on one side and his initials on the other. Served on the Cricket Club committee until 1915, when the Club suspended activities until 08 Apr 1919. Honorary Secretary of Berkhamsted Football Club at least 1899 - 1904. 04 Aug 1899 read the minutes and annual report to about 150 people at the AGM held at the Court House; re-elected Hon. Secretary and also undertook the duties of Treasure. In 1904 chosen as a Steward for the English Cup Final. In April 1904 visited Apsley (about 4 miles south-east of Berkhamsted) for Apsley versus Berkhamsted in the St. Mary's Cup - "Cheers were given for Mr. and the Misses Woodman, on the call of Mr. E. E. Thompson". Also in April 1904 attended a supper at the Castle Inn, Berkhamsted (headquarters of Berkhamsted Football Club) to celebrate the conclusion of a successful season and winning of the Apsley Charity Cup. Referring to Dr. Ker the chairman he said that "he only wished they had more gentlemen of his calibre in the town". The Club was a founder member of the Hertfordshire County League in the 1898-99 season. The players were known as "The Berkoes" and the ground was at Sunnyside. The FA Cup Final took place at Crystal Palace 23 Apr 1904, with an attendance of 61,374, when Manchester City beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0. In April 1899 on the committee of West Herts Football Association, representing Berkhamsted at a meeting held at the Malden Hotel, Watford. On 02 May 1904 attended a meeting of the committee at the Malden Hotel. In May 1904 refereed Watford Amateur Reserves versus Hitchin Union Jacks match. 08 Oct 1904 refereed Apsley Reserves v. Hempstead Reserves match. 15 Oct 1904 refereed Victoria Works (Watford) v. Clarenden match. About 1912 was Secretary of the Council of West Hertfordshire Football Association. 1904 Chairman of the Emergency Committee of Hertfordshire Football Association. In June and October 1904 presided over meetings of the Committee held at St Albans. 01 Nov 1904 represented Berkhamsted at a meeting of the Council of Hertfordshire Football Association held at the Bedford Head Hotel, Tottenham Court Road. Nov 1904 chaired a meeting of the Emergency Committee of Hertfordshire Football Association held at the Malden Hotel, Watford. Dec 1904 represented Berkhamsted at a meeting of the Council of Hertfordshire Football Association. About 1912 was Life Member of Hertfordshire Football Association. Football Association was founded in 1885, one the earliest County Associations set up under the umbrella of the Football Association to promote and look after the interests of Association Football. Name and address given as Secretary of both the Town Football and Cricket Clubs in every issue of the Berkhamsted Gazette newspaper through 1904 at least. In 1918 moved to 28 Wellmeadow Road, Hither Green and kept a tobacconist shop opposite the station at 80 Springbank Road, Hither Green, London SE 13. In 1924 still lived at 28 Wellmeadow Road, though the shop was then apparently vacant. Left Wellmeadow Road by 1925. In 1926 lived at 261 Holmsdale Road, South Norwood, London and worked as an Estate Agent. Period of illness Nov 1926 - Sep 1927. May have lived with daughter Gwen at Groombridge, Sussex for a short period. Moved to Weston, Hertfordshire in Nov 1928 and kept the village Post Office in Maiden Street. The bungalow has since been extended and is now known as Kwetu. One Christmas, probably 1928, visited brother Percy at Wimbledon. Died at Weston on the afternoon of Monday 15 Jul 1929 and buried at Holy Trinity Church, Weston, on Saturday 20 Jul 1929.
Edgar married Ruth GARRETT, daughter of Frederick GARRETT and Emily WILSON, on 26 Dec 1896 in Moordown Parish Church, Bournemouth. (Ruth GARRETT was born on 11 Dec 1876 in Berkhamsted, HRT, died on 15 Feb 1954 in Weston, HRT and was buried in Weston, HRT.) The cause of her death was cholaemia, pallative operation for carcinoma of pancreas and diverticulitis mass in sigmoid colon.
